- Expositional verse-by-verse preaching. February 28, 2021. Following Christ Will Cost You Everything.
- 1 Simeon a Peter, a servant b and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained 1 a faith of equal standing with ours 2 by the righteousness of our 3 God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 4 May grace and peace be multiplied to you 5 in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
- 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; j sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that k he appeared in order to l take away sins, and m in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; n no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, o let no one deceive you.
- Pray for All People. 2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 v for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and w dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and x it is pleasing in the sight of y God our Savior, 4 who desires z all people to be saved and a to come to b.
1Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers,2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.
3Honor widows who are truly widows.4But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.5She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day,6but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.7Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach.8But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Handgun hoedown mac os.
9Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband,a10and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of the saints, has cared for the afflicted, and has devoted herself to every good work.11But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry12and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith.13Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.14So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.15For some have already strayed after Satan.16If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows.
A Life Pleasing to God. 1 Finally, then, brothers, a we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: b that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one.
17Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.18For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”19Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.20As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.21In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.22Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.23(No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)24The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later.25So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

The Word Became Flesh
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2He was in the beginning with God.3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.4In him was life,a and the life was the light of men.5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.11He came to his own,b and his own peoplec did not receive him.12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,13 21 to gamble. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Sond from the Father, full of grace and truth.15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)16For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.e17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18No one has ever seen God; the only God,f who is at the Father’s side,g he has made him known.
The Testimony of John the Baptist

19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”22So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straighth the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Behold, the Lamb of God
29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”32And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.33I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Soni of God.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”39He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.j40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesusk was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peterl).
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”48Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”49Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”50Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”51And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,m you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
